You get both characters you care about in a fun movie. So you shoot camp around straight delivery to do it. For us to care about Otto’s redemption, his marriage needed to be real, his admiration and concern for Peter needed to be real, his loss of control needed to be real.
There was a lot of emotional hooks that needed buy ins and you can only do that if the main characters are played straight. The shots in 2 make up the bulk of the camp with exception to the murder by mechanical arms scene. Norman was the exception and stands out like a sore thumb.
In spidey 1, everything up until GG showing up is played straight, well, as straight as you can in a movie about dude bitten by a spider. Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2 are so different in delivery and Raimi experimenting with the aforementioned methods. I get Raimi is campy, but you can do campy in a number of ways, with the actor’ participation, or with editing and shots or a combination of both. This wasn’t my argument nor is it justification for turning green goblin into whatever nonsense it was.Īlfred delivered that line straight. I’m not ignoring that the Raimi movies are campy (I’m a huge Raimi fan, with his Spidey movies the sole exception).
